Villa will fancy their chances

Three successive draws have left Manchester City third in the Premier League and manager Pep Guardiola will hope to see a positive reaction at Villa Park.

However, the stadium has been a fortress for Unai Emery’s side and it could prove another tough task for City to end Villa’s run of 13 straight home league wins.

That excellent home record means Villa would have relished the chance to welcome a visit from the champions anyway, but City’s recent wobble should warm their hearts even more.

Emery’s team have scored at least twice in 11 of their last 12 league games on their own patch and, having notched an impressive 23 in their last six at home, they can be expected to score two or more goals on Wednesday. But it is not just their forward prowess that inspires confidence.

City have uncharacteristically conceded 10 goals in their past four games and will have to also cope with the absence of suspended defensive midfielder Rodri for this trip.

They were fuming at the end of Sunday’s 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur and their eagerness to make up for that disappointment could create gaps for Villa to exploit.

Watkins ready to make mark

Ollie Watkins is becoming one of the top strikers in the Premier League and his pace could cause City plenty of issues on Wednesday.

The former Brentford forward has scored in each of his past four appearances for Villa, including the winner at Spurs and a last-gasp equaliser at Bournemouth on Sunday.

Watkins has had 41 efforts on goal this season and at least two in nine of his last 10 club outings, so there looks a decent chance he will be able to take one in this test against the treble winners.

Another cracker looks likely

That fact that Villa, who have been transformed since Emery took over from Steven Gerrard just over a year ago, could go above City with another home win should ensure they adopt a positive attitude, which will be a vital ingredient in a game to relish.

So our bet-builder selection starts with the match featuring over 2.5 goals, which has happened in 11 of Villa’s 14 league games this season and nine of City’s last 12 outings in the top flight.

The second element concentrates on City corners. Guardiola’s side have the second-highest number of away corners in the league this season with an average of 7.57 per game and even though Jeremy Doku is an injury doubt and Jack Grealish is suspended, they should still be able to force at least six.

The City manager may have to make a tactical switch if both his main left-sided attackers are unavailable, so that could see City’s play concentrated more on the opposite flank.

Consequently, Villa left-back Lucas Digne could be in for a busy night. He has picked up four yellow cards this season and he could commit two or more fouls.
