Back from their emotional run in the Champions League, Chelsea face off against a scrappy Everton squad in matchweek 28 on Saturday.
Against the odds of how their season has gone, Chelsea has advanced to the final eight in the Champions League. The Blues return to the blues of their league season against a club solely focused on that.
Everton is in survival mode. While the English Premier League table sees Chelsea at a lackluster but safe 10th place positioning, Everton clings to 15th. That’s only three points off the bottom of the standings and one from the relegation zone.
After advancing in Europe, United States international Christian Pulisic and Chelsea did bring their winning streak in all competitions to three last week against Leicester City. That 3-1 lead felt suspect for a time.
After going up 1-0 early on Ben a Ben Chilwell goal, the Blues had a second goal from João Félix called off. Three minutes later, Leicester tied the match. But Kai Havertz put away a critical goal in the 46′ just before halftime to give his team the 2-1 lead and momentum.
Likewise, Everton is fresh off a win last week. It was a dream for manager Sean Dyche. Dwight McNeil scored in the first minute and that was that. A 1-0 win. Further adding some juice for the Toffees this week was goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who signed a new long-term contract to remain at the club.
Chelsea won the reverse fixture in this matchup, 1-0, on a penalty from the now Arsenal midfielder, Jorginho.
