Mertens Impresses in Miami

World No. 39 Elise Mertens has done well in Miami. Despite being put in a precarious bracket, the Belgian has navigated her way to the fourth round quite superbly.

In the opener, she defeated Alycia Parks and followed it with a three-set win over the eighth seed Daria Kasatkina. Next in the queue was Petra Martic, whom she dismissed 6-4, 6-3 on the back of a brilliant service game.

This feat marks the second time that Mertens will compete in the R16 in Miami – at least in the singles draw. As a doubles player, she is a former champion (2019) and the reigning runner-up.

Elise is also 12-7 this season, with a semifinal match in Monterrey and a third-round showing in Melbourne being her best runs.

Rybakina Upsets Badosa

Number 10 seed Elena Rybakina found herself in another demanding three-setter in Miami – this time with Paula Badosa. Although the Kazakh won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, it took her a little over two and a half hours.

It was a similar story with Anna Kalinskaya in the opener, with that match also lasting for over two hours.

Rybakina is coming off a great fortnight in Indian Wells, where she won the tournament, beating the likes of Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka in the closing rounds. It was her second final of the season – the other being the Australian Open – where she fell to Sabalenka.

With her record now at 18-4, Elena is looking to achieve the rare feat of winning Sunshine Doubles. It is not impossible by any means, but her last two matches do indicate that fatigue is starting to creep in.

Rybakina v Mertens Prediction and Tip

Rybakina is the odds-on favourite, but Mertens is more than equipped to beat her opponent. The Belgian’s wonderful doubles career does give her some experience to make things difficult for the current World No. 7. We may be looking at another three-setter here.
