West Ham United vs Arsenal predictions

Things can change quickly in a Premier League title race.

A week ago, Arsenal were eight points clear of Manchester City at the summit of the standings. By the time this match kicks off at the London Stadium, their lead could be down to three points.

City thumped Southampton 4-1 last Saturday to close the gap at the top, before Arsenal could only draw 2-2 with Liverpool the following day.

And with Pep Guardiola’s side strong favourites to beat Leicester City, the Gunners will probably be under pressure to respond when they face West Ham.

David Moyes’ men have had a tricky season, but the London Stadium remains a tough place to go. True, Newcastle United recently won 5-1 on this ground, but West Ham have avoided defeat in 71.4 percent of their home games this term.

A 1-0 triumph over Fulham last weekend has boosted their survival hopes, and a surprise win here would edge Moyes’ side closer to safety.

But Arsenal have shown commendable resilience throughout this season. There is no reason to doubt their mental strength or ability to respond to adversity.

They have had a full week to prepare for this London derby, in contrast to West Ham who travelled to Belgium to face Gent in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Arsenal may have to work hard for their three points this weekend, but they should come out on top and register their 24th win of the campaign.

West Ham United vs Arsenal betting tips

Arsenal have a formidable away record and they should have too much quality for West Ham in this crunch clash on Sunday.

First goal 11-20 minutes – 10/3 (bet365)

Only two teams in the Premier League – Leicester City and Southampton (the bottom two, incidentally) – have collected more points away than at home this season.

Arsenal have performed marginally better at the Emirates Stadium, but it is a close run thing. Thirty-eight of their points have been amassed in front of their own fans, and 35 at opposition grounds.

The Gunners are the Premier League’s top-performing team on the road. They have won 11 matches away from home, which is two more than Manchester City and at least four more than anyone else.

Even when they have dropped points on their travels, Arsenal have tended to start well. They were the better team in the first half of their 3-1 defeat by Manchester United earlier in the campaign.

And in the 2-2 draw at Anfield last time out, Arsenal stormed into a 2-0 lead and were utterly dominant in the opening half-hour.

The Gunners have scored 17 goals in the first half of their away games, another league-leading return. They have been ahead after 20 minutes in six of 15 matches at rival stadiums.

Overall no team has notched more goals in the first 20 minutes than Arsenal (12), while West Ham have conceded the first goal in 19 of their 29 top-flight fixtures.

Both teams to score – 10/11 (bet365)

Arsenal should prove too strong for West Ham on Sunday, but they might not have everything their own way in east London.

There will probably be a spell where they are put under pressure by the home team, who have plenty of attacking quality despite their lowly position in the table.

Arsenal have kept only one clean sheet in their last seven matches in all competitions, and William Saliba may again miss out through injury.

As for West Ham, they have found the net in five of their last six Premier League contests.

And while a return of 27 goals this season is pretty poor, the underlying data suggests they have underperformed their expected goals by a wide margin. This shows that West Ham are capable of creating decent opportunities.

The Gunners may need to score twice if they are to collect maximum points in this one.

Gabriel Martinelli to score any time – 2/1 (bet365)

Gabriel Martinelli was Arsenal’s most decisive player against Liverpool. The scorer of the opening goal then turned provider for the second, teeing up Gabriel Jesus with an inch-perfect cross.

Martinelli suffered a slight dip in form in the early part of 2023, when he went eight games without a goal in all competitions.

But that is only natural for a player of his age, and the 21-year-old has bounced back with a vengeance.

In his last 10 outings Martinelli has found the back of the net on seven occasions. In total this season he has 14 goals to his name, more than any of his team-mates.

Even with Gabriel Jesus back in the team, Martinelli is Arsenal’s chief goal threat. Jesus frequently drops deep to collect possession, encouraging his fellow Brazilian to make penetrating runs in behind the opposition backline.

Martinelli scored in the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, helping the Gunners to a 3-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.

With the youngster in fantastic form, he would be a good pick to score again this weekend.
